There seems to be a lot of talk about the new software build from Apple for Ventura not been able to be installed on some machines. The error that comes up when you run software update “Failed to prepare the software update. Please try again.” In very small font is says “Please try again” if you not got the message is the first place. Had a few machines with this issue along with a boot drive which is a clean macOS running 13.6 so lets look into a work around to fix this issue or blip.

You may asme get the message “An error occurred while installing the selected updates.”

There are several articles on this issue. Intel and Silicon which point you to the default gel article from Apple click here.
According to Apple support you can try several options.
- Clean the machine of “junk” basically remove any files that you don’t ned that are taking up loads of space.
- The next option is to repair disk permissions using disc utility.
- They also recommend a reboot and try again.
- If all that fails its a backup clean wipe and re install the Operating System then restore from Backup.
Here are two other options you can try:
- Download the latest build of Ventura and run the installer on the machine that has the issue of upgrading. ( You might get the InstallAssistant.pkg error)
- Or create the latest build of Ventura and set it up on a boot stick and reboot the machine with the issue and install the clean macOS over the top of the existing version.
Trying both methods the first option did not work for me . The download failed I got the InstallAssistant.pkg error oh hum and I was left with the same issue. The second option did install a clean 13.7.7 build over the top however if you going to do that I would recommend the Apple support idea mentioned above. Backup (Time Machine) reboot the machine in recovery wipe the drive and re install a clean macOS of Ventura 13.7.7 then restore fromTime Machine Backup.
Finally for these large builds we use to always download the combo update and run that which had all the additional software, drivers etc to install on your machine however Apple discontinued that option in ate 2020…. A shame really as this was always a quick fix for such blips like we are discussing here.
