Can You Use an Old Mac Keyboard with an M‑Series Mac?

Yes. Most older Apple keyboards—and almost all standard USB or Bluetooth keyboards—work with Apple’s M‑series Macs, including the M1, M2, M3, M4 and newer models.

Wired keyboards

If your keyboard has a USB-A cable, you can connect it using:

x
  • A USB-C-to-USB-A adapter
  • A USB-C hub or dock

If it uses Lightning, USB-C or a standard USB cable, it may connect directly or with the appropriate adapter.

Wireless keyboards

Older Apple wireless keyboards generally work through Bluetooth. Open:

Apple menu  → System Settings → Bluetooth

Then switch on the keyboard and select it from the list. You may need to connect it temporarily with a cable for pairing or charging. (support.apple.com)

What might not work?

Some special functions may be limited. For example, Touch ID keyboards are designed specifically for Apple-silicon Macs and may require macOS Sequoia 15.1 or later, depending on the model. (support.apple.com)

On Mac laptops with Apple silicon, macOS may also ask you to approve a new USB accessory the first time you connect it. Simply unlock the Mac and choose Allow. (support.apple.com)

The bottom line

There is no general “old keyboard” restriction on M‑series Macs. If the keyboard connects by USB or Bluetooth, it will probably work—although you may need an adapter, and a few special keys or features might not be supported.

Can You Still Use Your Old Mac Keyboard on an M-Series Mac?

If you’ve upgraded from an older Intel Mac to a newer Apple Silicon Mac with an M1, M2, M3, M4 or M5 chip, you don’t necessarily need to replace your keyboard.

USB Keyboards

Most older Apple USB keyboards will work perfectly with an M-Series Mac. Simply plug the keyboard into a suitable USB port or USB-C adapter, and macOS should recognise it automatically. They always work you just need the USB adapter to make it work on the newer mac’s. There are some M1 machines like the Mac mini (M1) which has the USB connectors built into the machine which works fine on Usb connections. Also I found the USB doc on the Mac USB keyboard works fine. I have found on the USB-C adaptor is temperamental on the USB keyboard side doc this is due to the USB-C adaptor and the power being drawn from the machine to allow the device to work.

Older Wireless Keyboards

Older Apple Bluetooth keyboards can also work with Apple Silicon Macs, provided they support Bluetooth and can be paired with the Mac. You may need to connect the keyboard using a cable initially, depending on the model.

What About Very Old Keyboards?

Even keyboards from several years ago can often continue working because basic keyboard functionality is handled directly by macOS. Some special keys or older features may not work exactly as they did on the original Mac.

What About 3rd party Keyboards?

Even 3rd party keyboards work as a basic keyboard functionality macOS handles the pair once you link it to the machine. Aways check how the bluetooth pairs (in the instruction manual) its not always clear how to activate the bluetooth trigger to pair with macOS. Some special keys or older features may not work. Sometimes a cheaper option that a second hand Mac keyboard. Its worth having a look see and check reviews before committing.

The Bottom Line

Don’t throw away your old Mac keyboard just because you’ve bought an M-Series Mac. In most cases, it will continue to work.

This is good news if you want to upgrade your Mac without having to replace all your existing accessories at the same time.
