Apple Finally Did It: Meet the iPhone Duo, Apple’s First Foldable iPhone

iPhone Duo

Apple has finally entered the foldable-phone market.

At its “Surprise and Shine” event on September 9, 2026, Apple unveiled the iPhone Duo, its first foldable iPhone and the company’s biggest iPhone redesign in almost a decade.

Unlike many existing foldables, the Duo takes a familiar approach: it looks and feels like an iPhone when closed, but opens like a book to reveal a much larger display.

Apple says the design will “redefine the experience of using a foldable phone.”

Two iPhones in One

Closed, the iPhone Duo features a 5.4-inch outer display, giving you a compact phone experience that Apple says offers around 90% of the screen area of the iPhone 18 Pro.

Open it up and the device transforms into a 7.6-inch continuous inner display — the largest screen ever fitted to an iPhone.

Apple says the inner display is around 50% larger than the iPhone 18 Pro Max, giving users considerably more space for multitasking, video, gaming and productivity.

The Duo is also remarkably thin. Fully opened, it measures just 5.2mm, making it the thinnest iPhone Apple has ever produced and 0.4mm thinner than the iPhone Air.

The chassis is machined from polished titanium, while the device features Ceramic Shield on the rear and Ceramic Shield 2 on the front. It also carries an IP68 rating for water and dust resistance.

Apple will launch the Duo in two colours: Star White and Night Sky.

Apple’s Answer to the Foldable Crease

The hinge is arguably the most interesting part of the iPhone Duo.

Apple says it contains more than 100 precision-engineered components, combined with a multilayer laminated construction and viscoelastic adhesives.

The company says this allows the display layers to move against one another like pages in a book.

Apple has also attacked one of the biggest complaints about foldable phones: the visible crease.

The inner display uses a custom nano-texture finish and a micro-lens texture created using maskless laser lithography. The result, according to Apple, is a “perceptually flat matte surface” that significantly reduces the appearance of the crease.

Two Displays, One iPhone Experience

Both displays support ProMotion, Always-On Display and up to 3,000 nits of outdoor brightness.

But Apple has also redesigned iOS to take advantage of the Duo’s unusual form factor.

Controls move towards the edges of the display to make them easier to reach with your thumbs, while the Dock becomes vertical.

Switching between the outer and inner displays is designed to feel seamless, with apps smoothly transitioning as you open or close the phone.

Multitasking gets a major upgrade too.

You can run two apps side-by-side, open two instances of the same app and save frequently used app combinations so they can be launched together later.

When the phone is partially folded, content automatically moves away from the hinge area where interaction can be more difficult.

Even the audio system adapts, with tuning changing according to the distance between the speakers as the device is folded.

There is also a new StandBy mode, turning the Duo into a bedside display for widgets such as music, calendar and weather.

Touch ID Makes a Comeback

One of the biggest surprises is the return of Touch ID.

Apple has integrated the fingerprint sensor into the side button, providing another way to unlock the device and authenticate payments.

The Duo can also be unlocked using an Apple Watch.

And for creative users, Apple Pencil support is coming to both displays later this year. The USB-C Apple Pencil will be supported.

Cameras Built for a Foldable

The iPhone Duo follows the same camera philosophy as the iPhone 18 Pro.

On the rear you’ll find:

  • 48MP Fusion Main camera
  • 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide camera
  • Optical-quality 2x zoom
  • Macro photography
  • 4K Dolby Vision video recording at 120fps

Apple has also packed the Duo with some clever selfie and video features.

The outer display includes a 12MP Center Stage camera, while an under-display FaceTime camera sits beneath the large inner screen.

The under-display camera can be used while the phone is fully open or partially folded.

The Duo also introduces Dual Capture, allowing the front and rear cameras to record simultaneously.

You can use the rear cameras for selfies while using the outer display as a preview screen.

A feature called Smart Take can automatically capture a photo when everyone in the shot is ready, while Kid Cuedisplays animations on the outer screen designed to encourage children to look towards the camera.

A20 Pro Powers the Duo

Inside the iPhone Duo is Apple’s new A20 Pro chip.

Apple claims the A20 Pro delivers up to 20% faster CPU performance and 40% faster GPU performancecompared with the previous-generation A19 Pro.

Because of the limited space inside such a thin device, Apple has also introduced a vapor-chamber cooling system to help manage temperatures during demanding workloads.

The Duo also debuts Apple’s new C2 modem, supporting 5G connectivity.

According to Apple, the C2 is up to 50% faster than C1X, adds 5G mmWave support in the US and can use up to 15% less power.

Connectivity includes Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread, supported by Apple’s N1 networking chip.

The iPhone Duo is eSIM-only worldwide.

Battery Life

Despite its incredibly thin design, Apple has managed to fit two battery cells inside the Duo.

The two cells operate together as a single battery system.

Apple claims up to:

  • 31 hours of video playback using the inner display
  • 44 hours using the outer display
  • 24 hours of mixed usage

Fast charging can take the battery to 50% in around 20 minutes, while just five minutes of charging can provide up to five hours of use on the outer display.

Wireless charging reaches 50% in around 30 minutes using MagSafe or Qi2.

iOS 27.1 and a New Siri

The iPhone Duo will ship with iOS 27.1.

The update also introduces Apple’s next-generation Siri features, including personal context and on-screen awareness.

These features will initially launch in beta, allowing Siri to understand more about what’s happening on the device and provide more context-aware assistance.

The Price: This Is Not a Cheap iPhone

And now for the part that will probably stop most people in their tracks.

The iPhone Duo starts at £1,999 ($1,999) for 256GB.

Higher-capacity versions will also be available with:

  • 512GB
  • 1TB
  • 2TB

Pre-orders open on Friday, October 16 at 5 a.m. Pacific Time.

The iPhone Duo will officially launch on October 23, with wider retail availability arriving on October 30.

Apple is also introducing a new Duo Folio case, featuring a built-in kickstand and a two-part design that protects both halves of the phone.

Apple Has Finally Arrived in the Foldable Market

For years, foldable smartphones have been available from companies such as Samsung and Google, while Apple appeared content to watch from the sidelines.

That changes with the iPhone Duo.

Apple hasn’t simply taken an existing iPhone and added a folding screen. It has redesigned the hardware, hinge, display, software, cameras and user interface around the concept.

The result is a device that Apple clearly wants to feel like an iPhone first and a foldable second.

At £1,999 ($1,999), the Duo is firmly positioned as a premium halo product rather than a mainstream iPhone.

But after years of waiting, Apple finally has an answer to the question that Samsung and Google have been asking iPhone users for years:

What if your iPhone could become a tablet?

The iPhone Duo is Apple’s answer — and it could completely change what we expect from the iPhone.
