OpenCore Legacy Patcher explained

OpenCore Legacy Patcher (OCLP) is a free, open-source tool developed by the Dortania team that allows users to install and run modern versions of macOS on older Mac computers that Apple no longer officially supports.

Apple typically drops support for older Mac models after about 7–8 years (sometimes longer for security patches), meaning those Macs can’t install newer macOS releases like Ventura, Sonoma, Sequoia, or the latest (as of February 2026, macOS Tahoe 26.x). OCLP changes that by “patching” the installation and boot process to make newer macOS versions boot and function on unsupported hardware.
