Draytek Firmware update breaks the internet

if you have a Draytek router dating back to the Vigor 2862 (which has been replaced by the DrayTek Vigor 2865), you may experience intermittent internet dropouts. This issue appears to be linked to a firmware update released in early March 2025.

If your router was running an older firmware version, you may need to either update to the latest stable version or downgrade to a previous, more reliable version. Check the Draytek support site for firmware options and test different versions to see which one provides the best stability. Click here for the latest version of firmware from the Draytek site.

To check the update you will need to login to the router via the web interface with the admin password and go to System Maintenance Firmware Upgrade.

Go to the Draytek support site and locate the latest firmware version for your specific router model. Once you have found the correct version, download it to your computer. Then, access the Draytek router’s configuration web page and navigate to the Firmware Upgrade section. Use the dropdown menu to select and upload the recommended firmware version for your router.

The router will now install the firmware version. The update and reboot process should not take long. Once the router has restarted, log in and check the firmware version displayed. Then, test the internet connection to ensure it is stable.

If you need to downgrade the firmware, follow the same process—find and download an older version. For example, if the router currently has version 3.9.9.9 installed and is experiencing connectivity issues, you can visit the Draytek firmware site and download an older version, such as 3.8.8. Once downloaded, upload the file through the firmware update option in the Draytek web interface.

Before proceeding, make sure to take a copy of the router batch file. This will be useful in case you need to factory reset the router and start over. It’s always better to err on the side of caution rather than rushing into a firmware upgrade.

If, after upgrading the firmware, you continue to experience issues, the problem may be with the router’s hardware. In that case, replacing the router might be necessary.
